Lorry driver from Seaford becomes millionaire after winning lottery

AN HGV driver from Seaford has quit his job and set his sights on a luxury retirement after banking a Lotto jackpot.

Robert Hutchison and his wife Carol netted £1,158,038 in the lotto draw on Saturday June 11.

The 62-year-old grandfather still went into work last week but handed in his notice since discovering his new millionaire status. Robert said: “It’s only just beginning to sink in. It’s great really. It’s a nice feeling but quite an unbelievable feeling.”

The HGV driver and driver demonstrator works for a company delivering new machinery and training operators. He was planning to retire at Christmas but has accelerated his plans after winning big. It was Carol, Robert’s wife, who discovered the win when she checked their emails on Sunday morning. Having played online at www.national-lottery.co.uk, Robert received an email declaring he had news about his ticket. Robert said: “I was in the garden sorting out my pond when Carol called me in.  We both expected it to be a tenner and when I logged in, a big congratulations popped up. Neither of us could believe it, it was pretty surreal I guess.”

Even after calling Camelot, Carol was quite disbelieving. The couple carried on their day as they had planned and went out to purchase a new pond pump. Robert said: “I had been worried about the new pump, it was £350 but had to get it for the fish.  I suppose now I can afford it.”

Despite retiring on Monday, Robert still did a day’s work, keen not to let the business down.  Carol, 67, who is already retired, and Robert are now planning to enjoy their retirement and new found wealth. The couple have a holiday already booked to Cornwall but now plan to upgrade. Robert said: “We wanted to go to the Scilly Isles but the helicopter was quite expensive. We can now fly in the chopper which will be fantastic.”

Other purchases include Robert’s dream car a Peugeot 407 Coupe. They also bought a return trip to Italy and a new bathroom.
