Low cost furniture shop given district council boost

FURNITURE Now!, the re-use, recycling and training charity will open its doors in Hailsham bringing a dedicated re-use facility to townsfolk and Wealden District generally during the first week of September.

Funding to help the project start at Shop One, North Street, has been provided by Wealden District Council in the form of a three year grant.

All items will have two prices, where people who can show they are on low incomes or benefits will get items at half price.

The charity will also be looking for volunteers and trainees.

Rik Child, the director of Furniture Now! was excited about brining the new venture to the town.

Mr Child said: “We are delighted to be opening in Hailsham.

“Public transport links to Eastbourne are not ideal and we are always having customers who visit our Eastbourne warehouse ask us to start a new store in Hailsham.

“Thanks to Wealden’s Strategic Grant we are now able to bring a re-use store to the district.

“Everyone is welcome to come and see what we have in stock and residents will be able to access the stock at the lowest prices if they are in receipt of benefits, pensions etc.”

He added: “We will be collecting furniture, white goods, electrical items and IT equipment from householders who no longer want them in the areas and all these products will be available for sale from Tuesday to Saturday in the Hailsham shop.

“Delivery in the Furniture Now! van will also be an option for customers but the public is encouraged to take items away or drop things into the shop themselves if they have the transport.”

The charity is employing resident Helen Lawrence, to run the shop who moved to Hailsham from Peacehaven in 2006.

She is well known locally to residents as the former popular landlady of the Kings Head Pub in South Road.

Helen Lawrence said: “I am looking forward to working with Furniture Now! and am excited about the imminent opening of a new store in Hailsham.”

The charity is also offering some paid pre-apprenticeship places to 16-18 year olds who did not get the GCSEs they wanted, or are not yet in college or work.
