Loyal Ann delivers dedicated service to the Post Office in Lewes

Happy Ann Tuson must have one of the most instantly recognisable faces in Lewes.

That’s thanks to a career with the Post Office locally that now spans 50 years.

And she’s proud to say that many of the customers she greets from behind the counter at the High Street premises are like old friends.

It was way back in 1963 that Ann started at the Lewes branch. She worked her way up to management positions in Sussex branches, including Newhaven, Hove, Haywards Heath and St James Street and Ship Street in Brighton.

She can’t claim half a century of unbroken service because she took eight years out when her children were born.

Ann returned to the Post Office in 1982 and now her career has come full circle as she walks part-time in Lewes at the age of 69.

Born and bred in the county town, she attended Western Road Primary School and Lewes County Grammar School for Girls before starting at what was then head office at the age of 19.

Ann said: “Most of the customers are really nice – just like friends.

“There are still some coming in who I remember from when I very first started.”

The grandmother of two, of Valley Dene, Newhaven, added: “It’s been a wonderful job. I love it.”

Her six colleagues at Lewes marked her 50-year milestone with flowers, chocolates and gift vouchers.
