Major road widening scheme for A23

LONG-awaited detailed plans for widening the A23 between Handcross and Warninglid have been published.

The Highways Agency have published draft orders and an environmental statement, which shows in detail how the road will be widened, junctions improved, accesses replaced and the measures it will take to mitigate the environmental impact.

The scheme, now priced at between 79m and 105m, will see 3.8km (2.4 miles) of the road widened from two lanes to a three lane dual carriageway.

It will upgrade a stretch of road which has become notorious for accidents and which is the only unimproved section of A23 between the M23 and Brighton.

Highways Agency project manager Chris Bacon said: "The widening of the A23 and planned removal of direct accesses will both ease congestion and improve the safety record of this road.

"We are holding a public exhibition early November and will announce the full details shortly."

The details can also be seen on the Highways Agency website at www.high ways.gov.uk/roads/projects/3998.aspx

People have until January 23, 2009 to formally respond and should write to: The A23 Handcross to Warninglid Team, Highways Agency, Major Projects (South), Federated House, London Road, Dorking, Surrey RH4 1SZ.

Start of work for the A23 is programmed during 2011-12 subject to funding and land approvals.
