Make over project at crime hot spot gets nod from council
An area of Hailsham linked to violence and anti-social behaviour will undergo major work to make it safer for residents.
More than £3,000-worth of work is set to transform land between the Diplocks Industrial Estate and housing in Bramble Drive in a cross-authority and business partnership-led project.
Hailsham Town Council has contributed £530 to the scheme to trim back trees and clear undergrowth.
Cllr Jo Bentley said something needed to be done to stop youngsters congregating in the area and allegedly setting light to trees.
She told members at this month’s full town council meeting: “It needs something to be done with it, if nothing else to make people feel safer in their homes.”
Father Darren Croxton collapsed in the road near Bramble Drive and was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital on January 23 where he later died of a stab wound.
The Safer Wealden Partnership, Alsford Timber, Metaltech, NSP Engineering Ltd and Wealden District Council are also contributing £530.
Around 150 bare root whips are due to be planted in the area in February 2013 as part of the project.
