The body of a man which washed up on the shore at Peacehaven beach has prompted a police appeal for information.
Officers said the man’s unclothed body was found at 4.40pm on Monday October 14.
It is believed he may be the man witnesses saw walking into rough seas from Brighton Beach on Friday October 4.
A search was mounted for the man by Newhaven Coastguards but he was never found and the search was called off.
The man was described as black, of stocky build, with a distinctive tattoo on his right upper arm, and with a short beard.
He was found on rocks below Cliff Avenue, having apparently been washed ashore. The body has not yet been identified.
A police spokesperson said: “Police, who are not treating the death as suspicious, are working with the Coroner’s Officer to establish the man’s identity, and are considering the possibility that he may be the same man who was seen to run into the sea at Brighton on 4 October.
“The tattoo comprises a large angel-style wing, and words including “...As I Walk Through The Valley Of Death I Shall Forever...” although other words are not decipherable.”
A clothed man was seen to enter the sea from Brighton Beach ebtween Palace Pier and the Marine just after 11am on Friday October 4 .
The reason for entering the sea, and his identity, were not known.
