Minibus named Newhaven Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club president

A NEW minibus was officially named Wilko’s Waggon in memory of former Newhaven Peacehaven and Seaford (NPS) Lions Club president John Wilkinson.

Mayors from across Seahaven attended the event which took place on Saturday January 21.

The naming ceremony was performed by John’s partner, Lioness Chris Clements.

Lions spokesperson Derek McGarvie said: “John Wilkinson had not only held several offices in NPS Lions Club, but had been a dedicated cabinet member of the South East District of Lions Clubs.

“He had been responsible for the collection and transport of surplus and used dental equipment to Third World countries which is another way in which Lions Clubs world-wide try to help those most in need.”

Before his retirement John was the head teacher at Blatchington Court School in Seaford, which was a Special School for Visually Impaired Children.

Attending the ceremony were the mayor of Newhaven Steve Saunders and mayoress Sharon Bewley, mayor of Seaford Linda Wallraven and her consort Liz Holland and the deputy mayor of Peacehaven Elayne Merry, as well as other Lions.

The mayor and deputy mayor of Telscombe Cliffs sent their apologies.

After the ceremony, refreshments were served in the Breakout Community Centre.

NPS Lions has two minibuses adapted for wheelchairs, which are used in Seahaven to transport people from the Parkinson’s Society, Stroke Club, Hard of Hearing and many other groups from nursing homes and youth groups.

The Lion’s Motto is “We Serve” and the club said it could serve the community by transporting people to their meetings and by taking them on outings.

If anyone is in need of transport, especially anyone with a disability, contact Lion Derek MacGarvie at dmacq@hotmail.co.uk or visit www.npslions.co.uk.
