UK Power Networks said 8,770 people in Sussex have been left without power following last nights storms (Monday December 23).

The company said the electricity network is built to be resilient but high winds blowing debris and trees onto overhead power lines overnight caused extensive damage - which engineers are working to fix.

A spokeswoman for UK Power Networks said: “People are being urged to report any power cut or damaged power lines on 0800 7838866 (South East). You can also see updates on our website and follow us on twitter. Anyone who spots a damaged power line should stay well clear and please report it on the relevant number above.

“UK Power Networks is planning to help customers who have lost power, with Christmas Day dinners. It is appealing for any restaurants or pubs in the East of England and South East who have spare tables on Christmas Day, to email SDCSupportContact@ukpowernetworks.co.uk.”
