MP Norman Baker hits out at unsightly graffiti at Lewes Magistrates’ Court

Lewes MP Norman Baker has enlisted the Ministry of Justice to get the ball rolling to clear up the unsightly graffiti which has appeared in recent weeks on the front of the town’s former Magistrates’ Court.

He has been in contact with the Minister for the Courts Service to relay his concerns that the external condition of the building has become unsightly and that if the graffiti is not removed it may encourage more damage to the building, particularly as it remains empty.

Mr Baker said: “The building may be closed currently, a decision which I vehemently opposed, but that does not mean it should just be left to become an eyesore.

“It is right in the centre of Lewes and the graffiti on it gives the wrong impression to visitors to the town. It is also not particularly pleasant for local residents either.

“I have therefore called for the graffiti to be removed swiftly, not least to ensure that its presence does not encourage more damage to the building.”

Meanwhile, an announcement is expected soon on who has bought the former Magistrates’ Court, a purpose-built, bomb-proof building which was opened in 1983 by Diana, Princess of Wales.
