MP Charles Hendry will take up closure of Wealden Skills Centre with Government
AFTER THE CLOSURE of the Wealden Skills Centre was announced, Charles Hendry MP told the Express he plans to take the matter up with the Education Secretary.
He said: “I was very concerned to be notified by Wealden’s local community colleges this week of their decision to close the Wealden Skills Centre in Uckfield. The Centre has been an exceptional facility for students to learn the skills they need to find work. We all recognise that not every child is academic and many young people are better off being taught a real, practical skill in a work-like environment rather than staying in the classroom. The Centre has helped to keep many young people engaged in learning. It is the idea that is at the heart of the Government’s Technical University concept. I have asked the colleges to give me more details on the funding shortfall, so I can, even at this late stage, explore whether there is anything further the Education Secretary, Michael Gove, can do to help.”
