Charleston Farmhouse at Firle could have a new gallery and art store if an application submitted this week is approved by planners.

The Eastbourne Road listed building was the home and country meeting place for the writers, painters and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury group.

Plans before the South Downs National Park authority include repairs and alterations to a Sussex Barn, reconstruction of a timber framed granary demolished in 1973, construction of a new gallery and art store, together with a kitchen and lavatories and conversion of existing vernacular building as offices, shop and ancillary spaces.

The house is a unique example of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant’s decorative style within a domestic context, representing over 60 years of creativity.
