It’s business as usual for traders in Herstmonceux despite major repair work being undertaken in the heart of the village.

A series of measure have been put in place by South East Water to ease disruption as it continues work to install a £127,000 new water main in Gardner Street.

Temporary traffic lights have been installed along the road to ensure motorists can still pass safely through the village while the work is undertaken.

Alternative parking has been provided in the Sundial Restaurant for the start of this work so customers can still visit the local shops as they drive through.

Caroline Davenport-Thomas, who owns Davenport’s Delicatessen in Gardner Street, said: “All the shops in Herstmonceux are still open as normal and in fact, because this temporary parking is in a car park, it makes it easy to quickly stop off and pop in while passing through.”

The temporary parking is clearly signed and will be available until January 22 when the Company hopes construction will begin moving out of the village and motorists can continue parking as they did before.

The scheme to renew 530 metres of water main in Gardner Street is expected to take until the end of April to complete.

Construction between the junctions of West End and Chapel Row is to reduce the likelihood of bursts occurring along the stretch of road.
