New York, Paris...Hastings - 1066 Country shopping hotspot

Forget New York, Paris and Rome - Hastings has been labelled one of the world's top shopping destinations.

1066 Country may be considered more Asda than Armani, but according to a recent newspaper article Hastings is one of the top places for a shopping-spree.

In last week's Observer newspaper, seven places were named around the world where you could enjoy a guilt-free shopping spree. And, nestling on the page between Paris and Antwerp, were Hastings and St Leonards.

The article referred to Hastings' long held shabby-chic reputation, and the way that Norman Road is transforming St Leonards, 'lined with boutiques, shops, and stores selling retro bits and bobs and vintage frocks.'

Kevin Boorman, Hastings Borough Council's spokesman, was pleased but not surprised by the feature. He said : "This article is the latest in a long line comparing us with other, some would say far more exotic, destinations.

"But I'm not surprised, you've only got to walk along Norman Road, as the article suggests, or explore George Street, High Street, or Courthouse Street in the Old Town, to see the most amazing, individual, and unique shops.

"I'm really pleased that our message that Hastings really is improving, and rates alongside other top destination in the world, is being taken seriously.

"I'm extremely grateful to the shop owners for the tremendous work they do in putting Hastings and St Leonards on the map. Articles like this can only be good for the town and its reputation, and undoubtedly will provide a useful fillip to the retail economy here."
