LONG-time local resident Baroness Cumberlege officially opened a new affordable Hastoe housing scheme in Newick – the second Hastoe development in the village.

Alexander Mead (31-44) is an attractive development of 14 new homes, including 10 for rent and four for shared ownership. The site is a rural exception development and priority is for local people now and in the future.

Following the successful completion of the previous development in 2003, 1-10 Alexander Mead, Newick Parish Council invited the Rural Housing Enabler and Hastoe to explore the possibility of a further affordable housing project.

The housing needs survey resulted in these homes being provided on land made available by Mr Douglas Alexander. With support from the Homes and Communities Agency and Lewes District Council, the homes were completed in January.

The scheme has achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. Features include photovoltaic panels on the roofs which provide some free electricity to the residents, whole house ventilation system, improved insulation and air tightness, water saving taps and shower fittings, low energy lighting, recycling facilities, bicycle storage, composter, bird boxes and bird tables.

The flats and houses are available for rent or as shared ownership.

Cllr John Lucas, Newick Parish Council Chairman, said: “On behalf of the council, may I just thank all concerned in getting the second phase of Alexander Mead built. Some of the present parish councillors had a preview of some of the homes just before they were finished, and we all agreed that they had been built to an excellent standard.

“All the present Parish Council has to do now is work out how best to provide some more affordable housing, as we know the demand is there.”

Baroness Cumberlege commented: “Newick is a vibrant village. The strength of the community is partly due to the decades of careful planning with a variety of housing. Phase 2 of Alexander Mead strengthens the life of the village. This imaginative development by the Hastoe Group, working with local organisations to attract young couples and others with connections to Newick who want high quality homes at affordable rents and shared ownership, is welcomed by all the village.”
