North Chailey road safety petition calls for action on the A272

People living near the busy A272 road in North Chailey are appealing for a review of the speed limits and a safer crossing solution.

A petition will be presented to East Sussex County Council next month calling for action on what has been described as

an “especially hazardous” situation.

It has been organised by local Lewes District Council members Sharon Davy (Chailey and Wiveslfield) and Jim Sheppard (Newick).

Their move was triggered by an accident in November last year in which a pupil at Chailey School was hurt in a collision with a car as she crossed the A272 to catch her bus.

Initial concerns were raised at a meeting in December where local residents met Helen Pace, the county council’s Principal Road Safety Officer and a representative from Sussex Police. Chailey’s county councillor Meg Stroude also attended.

Cllr Davy said: “We want to find a solution but of course can’t make promises we cannot fulfil – that would be dishonest. However, we believe our residents’ views and suggestions present a strong case for consideration.”

Cllr Sheppard said: “This 50mph stretch of the A272, sandwiched between a 30mph limit at The King’s Head Roundabout then 40 and 30mph limits approaching Newick, is especially hazardous for children and the elderly.”

They have urged concerned residents to sign the safety petition, which will be presented to the county council at its full meeting on March 26. A copy will also be presented to Sussex Police.

The petition can be found at The King’s Head pub and petrol station, and at Newick General Stores.
