A cheque presentation last week ensured £500 went directly to supporting older folk in Uckfield.

Barchester Healthcare, owners of the Hurstwood View Care Home in Five Ash Down handed the cheque to Graham Russell, President of the Uckfield and District Lions Club.

The home has been nominated for the prestigious Pinders Healthcare Design awards and, as a finalist, was awarded £500 to give to a charity of its choice.

Patrick Gillan, homes services advisor, said: “The decision to give the money to the Uckfield and District Lions Club was an easy one as the charity does so much to support community organisations like local hospices and the Sussex Air Ambulance.”

Uckfield Lions are now raising more than £18,000 each year which could not be done without the fantastic support from people in Uckfield. Fundraising events include the Lions Santa sleigh and Christmas raffle, Easter egg raffle, fun run, classic car rally, Lions Day in June and the secondhand bookshop which is open all year.

Much of the money is spent locally supporting charities and good causes such as the Sussex Starfish Search and Rescue, Community First Responders, ITM Soil Mental Health Foundation, STARFISH project for people who stammer, Brighter Uckfield Campaign, Uckfield PHAB Club, Skills for Life, Uckfield Housebound Club, Local Hospices, Chailey Heritage, Sussex Air Ambulance, Wealden Talking News, Linked Hands, Sussex Spina Bifida, Care for Carers and many more.

Lions now operate the Uckfield Housebound Club which provides lunch and tea outings for people unable to get out and meet people on their own. Minibuses collect and return members to and from their homes.

The money kindly donated by Hurstwood View will be used to support the Housebound Club.

Jane Higgins, general manager at Hurstwood View, said: “Our residents were delighted when the Lions came round to the Home over Christmas and it only seemed right to donate the money to such a fabulous charity.”

Hurstwood View opened last September and services include respite, 24 hour nursing and dementia care in a warm, homely and friendly environment. This month the home will host a Time for a Cuppa event in aid of Dementia UK when everyone can join them for tea and cake and tour the home too.

Internationally Uckfield Lions support many international projects including the Lions Sight Programme. This project works throughout the world to eradicate blindness and prevents serious vision loss for more than 30 million people worldwide.
