Olympics inspire young Crowborough triathletes

MORE THAN 130 youngsters have signed up to take part in the first ever children’s triathlon event taking place at the Crowborough Leisure Centre tomorrow.

Competitors between eight and 14 will swim, cycle and run their individual distances, listening to cheers from their families as they head towards their own gold medals.

The inspirational Olympics and the gold medal winning triathlete Alistair Brownlee has ensured interest in the sport has peaked for children. This meant more than 120 young people took part in the Uckfield Kidstri on August 12. But organisers point out that the response to the event at Crowborough has been far greater - possibly because of Team GB’s giant medal haul.

Spokesman Paul Hedger hopes to enlarge entry numbers so everyone showing an interest before the event can be accommodated.

Instead of racing against each other, all the children will make an individual start, so they are competing against the clock. Results published when they have all finished will show the final positions.

There are Tristars, Triathlon England category races, and novice races which have the most competitors with more than 60 taking part.

The cycle and running courses are on marked routes using the cinder track and lower sports areas well away from the road, so all are perfectly safe.

On the following day, the Sunday, the adults get their chance to race race with a sprint and novice triathlon as well as a duathlon (run/cycle/run.) All events are run by the Hedgehogtri Events Team.
