Our man in Hastings: Diary of Sierra Leone visit

Council leader Peter Pragnell is in Hastings Sierra Leone and is writing a blog for the Observer.

We arrived about an hour ago - six hour late due to 'a technical fault' with our plane. 180 mph tailwinds cut the flight time by about half an hour.

We've met Derek Tomblin, Vice Chairman of the Hastings Sierra Leone Friendship Link, along with Yvonne & Yvette, sisters from Hastings SL, who are all invaluable to us.

We were also met by Paul Allieu Kamara, Public Relations Officer for Western Area Rural District Council, who is the equivalent to our Kevin Boorman. Already we're talking business - local government is the same the world over - and itineraries.

So, tomorrow we start in earnest.

We're currently queueing for the ferry across the river to the city.

More tomorrow.
