Oxfam organises 100km walk across South Downs

OXFAM is appealing for people to take part in a non stop 100km walk across the South Downs to raise money.

It will begin at Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield on Saturday July 17 and end at Brighton the next day.

Money will also go to the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

Organisers are hoping for 2,000 people to take part.

Teams of four walk through the night to complete the course in under 30 hours.

Last year's South Downs event saw 480 teams take part, raising a total of 1.3m.

The event, which was once a key part of the Gurkha's military fitness regime, is jointly organised with the Queen's Gurkhas Signals.

Fundraising and communications manager at Oxfam Rick Lay said: "Trailwalker is a really exciting challenge and completing the course brings a huge sense of achievement – not many people can say they have walked two and a half marathons, non stop.

"You obviously need to train for Trailwalker, but the great thing is that people can do it at their own pace so there's no real barrier to getting involved."

Oxfam is a leading international Non Governmental Organisation which aims to help people overcome poverty and suffering.

The Gurkha Welfare Trust relieves poverty and distress amongst Gurkha veterans of the Crown and their dependents.
