Lewes Area Music Centre hosted a wonderful String Gala Day for more than 150 Year 2 to Year 6 pupils from the Lewes area.

The day began with rehearsals and finished with a concert enjoyed by a packed house.

The audience enjoyed a variety of pieces such as Pachelbel’s Canon, Chorus from Judas Macabeus and What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor, beautifully played by the cello group.

The Handel String Orchestra, the more senior pupils up to Year 11, finished off the concert with the ever familiar Entry of the Gladiators.

The Gala Day was the brainchild of Simon Smith, a violin/viola teacher with the East Sussex Music Service, who wanted to bring together as many of the organisation’s young violists and cellists from the area as possible, giving them their first opportunity to perform.

The East Sussex Music Service is an East Sussex County Council service which provides music tuition and teaching alongside a whole host of concert groups, choirs, wind bands and ensembles.
