Parking wars at village playgroup
Hellingly parking. Tracy Harper, owner of play group. says they suffer abuse from parents dropping children off at primary school.
Parents were this week being urged to remain polite and considerate when dropping off pupils outside school.
An allegedly heated discussion outside Hellingly Community Primary School follows reports by the Sussex Express of parents clashing with residents outside Hailsham’s Groveland’s School.
The latest incident centred on parking issues outside Hellingly Village Hall, where Hellingly playgroup meets.
The incident was reported to the primary school by owner of the play group, Tracy Harper.
Mrs Harper said the angry confrontations had been going on for years, blaming parents for the confrontations which she claims are getting worse.
She said: “One of my staff arrived for work a few moments later than normal and when she got there the car park was already full because parents get there early and park at the front and block the back entrance.
“All my staff park in the back so parents can park in front of them but when she arrived four cars were in front of the road to drop the kids off at the school.
“My staff member couldn’t get to the private spaces and asked one of the parents to move.”
She claimed his response was less than polite.
She went to the school and said they couldn’t park there.
The school does point this out in a news letter, but this time they said there was nothing they could do about it because they couldn’t have anyone patrolling outside the school because of health and safety.
“The playgroup has had this issue for years but it’s getting worse.
The argument we get is ‘we are just dropping off our kids’ but that is not our problem.
“We all know the parking is bad but it’s the abuse when you say they cannot park here.
“It’s been going on for many, many years but it’s getting worse.
“Parents are giving more verbal abuse to us.
“They think there’s a space to park and it’s their right to park there rather then park down the road.”
A small piece of Tarmac, where the latest confrontation happened, outside the hall belongs to Hellingly Parish Council.
Philip Moon, clerk to the council, said: “The council owns the car park and allows people to use it, but priority should be given to hall users.”
