Passion play in Lewes

THE UPCOMING Lewes Passion Play 2010 – set to hit the town centre this Easter – has seen a youth worker step forward to act the role of Jesus Christ.

James Bamber, aged 19 and from Lewes, has been working with teenagers at Southover Church during his 'gap' year.

The former Southover School pupil was asked to act by Churches Together in Lewes.

Mr Bamber said it would be the 'greatest challenge' taking on such a major role.

He said: "Someone mentioned to me that they were still looking for people to play various parts and that they thought it might be something I could do since I enjoy drama. After auditioning for just any role I was asked if I would be happy to play Jesus if they wanted me to, and I said yes."

The week of four connected plays begins on Palm Sunday, March 28, with a procession at 2pm from St Anne's Church down the High Street to Cliffe Precinct, with the first Easter story events being acted out – finishing with a drama in Grange Gardens.

On Maundy Thursday, at 8.30pm, there will be the Last Supper, arrest and trial of Christ shown in a dramatic performance in Grange Gardens.

Good Friday will see a final trial in the town centre (Cliffe) at 12.30pm with a crucifixion scene at The Mount after a procession via Friars Walk.

Later, on Easter Sunday, April 4, the resurrection of Jesus will be acted out at 3pm in Grange Gardens.

Organiser Eleanor Austin said the production, with the support of townsfolk, had come together 'very well'.

She said: "Everyone has offered their time and talents freely."
