Peacehaven man charged with murdering his wife in Brighton
Sam Medland
“A ray of sunshine to those she met,” was how the family of 24-year-old Sam Medland described her, after her husband was charged with her murder.
She died in hospital after a stabbing incident in Queen Square, close to Churchill Square Shopping Centre, on Sunday night (February 17).
Ty Medland, 25, of Cavell Avenue, Peacehaven, was due to appear in Brighton Magistrates Court today (Wednesday February 20).
Sam’s mother Amelia Shah said: “My daughter Sam was always a ray of sunshine to those she met.
“Her untimely death has touched so many people, including the medical staff who tried to save her life.
“Sam leaves behind mum, dad, her sisters Teresa and Lisa Jo Saphirre and her brother Ali and so many friends. She also leaves her niece Rosalie-Jayne and nephew Tyler-Jay.
“She will be greatly missed by us all. We would now like to be left to grieve our loss in peace.”
Sussex Police said they were called to Queen Square following a report that a woman had received serious stab wounds.
Sam was found at the scene with serious injuries and was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but sadly died a short time later.
Medland was arrested at the scene by police on suspicion of murder and was also taken to hospital where he received treatment for stab wounds to his body. These were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police said a post mortem revealed that Sam died as a result of multiple stab wounds.
Detective chief inspector Mark Preston of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “I would like to thank the members of public who have assisted us in our investigation so far.
“Our thoughts are with the family of Sam as they try to come to terms with her death.”
Anyone with information about this incident, who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Westfield.
