AN ENVIRONMENTAL group claims its plan to raise the banks of an iconic river could save millions.
The Cuckmere Valley Campaign said its scheme cost 900,000 whereas an alternative proposal cost 18m.
But the Cuckmere Estuary Partnership which is leading a consultation on the estuary welcomed the discussion of the proposal.
Campaign spokesperson Alan Edgar said: "Our plan was costed at 900,000 - a significant saving on 18m to the public purse."
The group wants to raise banks by one foot to retain meanders, four popular footpaths and 450,000 visitors annually.
It suggested dredging the river and compacting material on to banks.
This would keep the channel clear and lower water levels in Alfriston.
