Children help to create artwork for new development in Polegate

Youngsters from Polegate are helping to create a public artwork at a new housing development in the town.

The 1st Polegate Cubs and members of Polegate Youth Club worked with artist and public art consultant Kevin Wilson, from ArtPoint Trust, to create striking designs for the development’s showpiece work at a hands-on art session held at Polegate Community Centre.

The showpiece work will be put up at The Mill, a new housing development of 260 homes at Shepham Lane which developer Taylor Wimpey is delivering in partnership with Raglan Housing and Wealden District Council.

Using air-dried clay, painting and drawing, the youngsters came up with lots of ideas, inspired by the natural environment and the architecture of the new homes at the development.

Kevin will now use the children’s best ideas to create three potential design options for public art at The Mill. The art will be jointly commissioned by Taylor Wimpey South East and Raglan Housing, which is delivering a mix of 78 affordable homes for rent and shared ownership within the development.

Kevin said: “It’s always very rewarding to work with children on art projects, and it’s great to involve the local community in the creation of works which are intended to be appreciated by the public.

“The young people who took part in the workshop came up with some fantastic ideas which will now be incorporated into the design options for the public artwork to be located between the two apartment blocks at The Mill. I hope local people will appreciate their ideas as much as the children enjoyed creating them.”

Jason Stokes, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, said: “Public art is a fantastic way to bring a local community together and this exciting project is really going to provide a wonderful finishing touch to our development.”
