Police seek motorists after fatal crash

POLICE are urgently seeking two motorists who were involved in a fatal car collision on Thursday afternoon (May 17) on the B2102 between Cross In Hand and Blackboys.

Both drivers left the scene of the accident, which happened at the junction with Warren Lane at about 3.30pm, and police are anxious to trace them as soon as possible.

Sgt Owen Radley, who is investigating Operation Northman, said: “It is vital that I trace these drivers as quickly as possible as they could be critical witnesses.

“It may be that they are unaware of what subsequently happened and they are not being treated as suspects at this time, but it is imperative that I speak to them to enable us to find out what happened on this stretch of road this afternoon.”

It is believed the tragedy happened after two cars - a black Mini Copper and a red Volkwagen Golf - overtook a third car along the B2102.

They had both completed the manoeuvre but as they approached Warren Lane the Mini swerved before continuing on its journey.

The Golf, driven by an East Sussex man in his 40s, also swerved and was then in collision with a van travelling on the opposite side of the road. He subsequently died from his injuries.

“We are looking for the driver of the black Mini and also the person who was driving the vehicle that had been overtaken by the Mini and the red Golf,” said Sgt Radley.

“I would like to stress again that at this time they are not suspects, but potentially very important witnesses. I would urge them to contact police immediately on 101, quoting Operation Northman or serial 0999 of today’s date.”
