Programme announced by Uckfield Film Society

UCKFIELD Film Society's 11th season opens on Sunday, September 12, with a programme chosen from a wide range of genre, a mix of classic and modern works.

The opening film is Black Narcissus, the 1947 film by the British director-writer team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, a psychological drama about the emotional tensions within a convent of nuns in an isolated Himalayan valley.

It stars Deborah Kerr, Sabu, David Farrar, Flora Robson, Esmond Knight, Jean Simmons and Kathleen Byron.

Films for the season are chosen by a committee including Renee Goddard, professional actress and stage manager, who served on the board of BAFTA for some years and Leslie Hardcastle, OBE., long time director of the National Film Theatre and former director of the Museum of the Moving Image, as well as cinema owner Kevin Markwick.

Committee member Tricia Bentley said: "We are fortunate to meet in a comfortable and modern, air conditioned cinema and to have such distinguished committee members to select our films.

"Often the screening is presented by a specialist speaker and for our first film of the new season Professor Ian Christie, of Birkbeck College, introduces one of the cinema's most visually beautiful films, shot in Technicolor, for which cinematographer Jack Cardiff received an Oscar."

The Uckfield Film Society meets monthly on a Sunday at 8pm. Membership is 30 a year and entitles members to attend all nine showings.

Included in this programme is an illustrated presentation by the renowned television and film producer David Rose, whose career spans Z

Cars to the film-making policy of Channel Four, which nurtured the early work of Stephen Frears, Alan Bleasdale, Mike Leigh and many others. Programmes from The Picture House, Uckfield or: 01825 764909.
