Public toilets in Polegate’s High Street are set to close after councillors decided not to take on financial responsibility for them.

The toilets were discussed by Polegate Town Council (PTC) on Monday (January 27).

At the meeting councillors decided not to take on the toilets after Wealden District Council (WDC) said it could no longer finance them.

A spokeswoman for PTC said: “Polegate Town Council (PTC) met on Monday evening to discuss the possibility of taking on financial responsibility for the toilets in the High Street.

Despite several options being offered by WDC, they would all have resulted in a prohibitive medium/long term financial burden on the precept and therefore the council tax payers of Polegate. On a majority vote it was therefore decided that, regrettably, WDC will proceed with the proposed closure from 1 April 2014.

“PTC will continue to offer public toilet facilities at the War Memorial Recreation Ground and will explore other suggestions for town centre provision.”
