Rail death warning over new estate

A CHILD will die if a bridge is not built over a rail line near a new 475-house estate, councillors are warning.

Residents near the Keymer Tiles claypits at Burgess Hill will have the homes on their doorstep after the approval of a scheme by Mid Sussex Council.

And councillors believe that more children would use the One O'Clock Lane footpath that crosses the busy Lewes line only a few hundred yards from the new houses.

Planners have reached stalemate over who would pay for a bridge.

Network Rail is worried about future safety and says its key reason for opposing the estate was developers did not make provision for the new crossing.

The rail company wants to shut the foot crossing but insists developers must pay for the bridge.
