Rain puts dampener on festival but still one to go

A FREE music festival in Newhaven which was raising money for charity was lashed by heavy rain on Saturday August 25.

Rock-Haven was designed to raise money for Haydn’s Wish, a charity set up to research links between allergies , asthma, hay fever and eczema.

However another music festival is taking place at The Engineer on Saturday September 1 and will also raise money for Haydn’s Wish, as well as Chailey Heritage.

A spokesperson for Newhaven Nomads, which organised Rock-Haven, said: “Unfortunately the weather was atrocious for the Rock-Haven event, with only about 300-400 hardy souls braving the weather.

“Despite the wind and rain all the bands turned up and everyone had a great time.”

The Nomads, a group of volunteers who raise money for good causes, are still tallying up how much they raised at the event and should have the final total soon.

The free concert Rock-Haven was held on the West Quay Lawns and featured live bands, fairground rides and stalls, as well as a beer tent.

Haydn’s Wish was set up following the sudden death of Haydn Wileman, a nine-year-old pupil from Southdown Junior School, Newhaven, who died after eating his favourite breakfast cereal.

The Engineer Charity Bash will take place from 2pm until 11pm at the Engineer Public House, in Railway Road, Newhaven.

The charity bash will feature live music from six bands: The Riffz, Shot Rod, The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Rockits, The Firm and Random, who are all playing for no fee.

There will a barbecue, face painting, raffle, tombola, cake stall, hog roast and bouncy castle and a large marquee.
