Residents go ‘quackers’ after ducks cause £30,000 damage to historic Westham pond
An historic village pond ruined by “delinquent” ducks is set to receive a major facelift thanks to a huge cash boost.
A project to carry out restoration works at Westham’s pond has received a £25,931 cash boost from SITA Trust.
The project, funded by the landfill communities fund, to repair damage caused by the constant pecking by the village’s ducks is estimated to cost around £30,000.
Plans to maintain the ancient pond for future generations include using the latest ecological solutions to secure the eroding banks and create a sustainable, visually attractive habitat.
Jools Granville of SITA Trust said: “It seems that the problem has mainly been caused by duck activity, and the bank deterioration seems to be accelerating as the banks become steeper (and easier to peck). In places they have eroded back by about three metres so far.
“Obviously the residents of Westham are very fond of their delinquent ducks, who are even known to wander into council meetings to state an opinion, so a solution to secure the pond whilst ensuring the feathery rascals remain happy is to be instigated.”
SITA Trust provides funding through the Landfill Communities Fund. Funding is available for projects that enhance communities and enrich nature.
Peter Marshall, the Westham Parish Councillor leading the project said: “We are extremely grateful to the SITA Trust, without its help this project would not have been possible.”
The parish council apologises for any inconvenience caused while the work takes place.
