Residents 'incensed' by Findon Valley family centre

ANGRY Findon Valley residents are geared-up for a last-ditch effort to prevent the county council approving a new children and family centre on the Vale First and Middle School site.

They feel Worthing Borough Council let them down when its development control committee decided on Tuesday not to object to the centre, which would include a new car parking area and a new hygiene and therapy facility for pupils.

Residents' representatives will be speaking at next Tuesday's meeting of the county planning committee, which is set to approve the scheme.

But before then, a public meeting will be held tomorrow evening (Friday) at Findon Valley Free Church hall, opposite the library, starting at 7pm.

It has been arranged by MP Tim Loughton, in conjunction with Findon Valley Residents' Association.

Maggie Winter, planning spokesperson for the association, told the Herald yesterday (Wednesday) the county council representative was given more opportunity at Tuesday's borough planning meeting to state his council's case, compared with the residents' speaking time.

Another local resident, Helen Higgins, said: "I am so incensed. Local democracy has gone out of the window over this issue."

The issue at Tuesday's Worthing planning meeting was chaired by Joan Bradley, committee vice-chairman, who told the Herald afterwards: "This is a county issue and we are not able to say yes or no. Most of the residents were worried about increased traffic.

"We are concerned about their worries, but we did not have any evidence that there would be a substantial increase in such traffic."
