'Revolting smell' upsets villagers

HUMAN waste smells have upset villagers.

Treated effluent was spread on fields a week ago in Cowbeech, near Hailsham.

Resident Sally Wallis said: 'A prevailing south westerly wind has spread the smell over the village.

'Most of us in the village are retired and we have been suffering very badly.

'It is an unacceptable way of dispersing the stuff.'

Mrs Wallis said she could see lumps of human waste dotted all over the fields.

She had also seen footpaths 'completely obliterated' by sprayed muck.

Her neighbour could no longer walk his dog on the paths.

She added: 'They have harrowed it but not ploughed the effluent in.'

Sam Hobden had not noticed the smell from his farm just outside the village.

He said: 'It doesn't affect me where I live but people in the pub were talking about it.

'They said it was a revolting smell and they have had to keep windows shut.'

A Wealden District Council spokesman said two complaints had been made by residents.

He said: 'We are looking into the matter.

'We are talking to the Environment Agency and will be visiting the farm in question.'
