Riddle of the park artefacts

Archaeological studies suggest the area where Peacehaven’s new park will be built could be one of Britain’s most significant archaeological sites.

This is because it provides a vast landscape history showing settlements and lifestyles from the prehistoric era to the early Romans.

A planning application for the park is due to be submitted to Lewes District Council from the Big Parks Project board in March.

The application is based on the key elements featured in the master plan drawn up by the Landscape Architects last year.

The plans will include elements which highlight the park site’s ancient origins.

The Big Parks project board is keen to ensure that local people are made aware of, and can also be involved with the preservation and interpretation of the landscape heritage of the land.

The park planners intend to include unique and innovative reminders and signage linking the past to the present day, throughout the park.

Councillor Andy Smith (Con, East Saltdean and Telscombe Cliffs), who chairs the project board said: “The new park will bring a great opportunity for the local community to discover Peacehaven’s unique history whilst enjoying the benefits of improved play and sports facilities.”

The plans also include a natural playground, toddler play, two new sports pitches and allotments.

It will also become a gateway to the South Downs National Park.

The park has been made possible as a result of planning money from Southern Water’s water treatment works and Bovis Homes.
