Road safety in Lewes an increasing concern for campaigner

Residential 20mph speed limits across Lewes have been recommended to progress to the detail design stage.

The move follows East Sussex County Council’s public consultation in the autumn as part of the ‘Lewes Steps Forward’ initiative.

The speed limits cover the Malling, Barons Down and Winterbourne, Houndean, Nevill, Wallands and Landport areas.

Local road safety campaigner and Malling resident Matt Kent said: “This is promising news, and I hope for the residents of Malling that the county council has listened after a petition for a 20mph speed limit from the community was submitted and tabled in the summer by myself and Cllr Rosalyn St.Pierre.

“Road safety is becoming more of a concern in Malling, especially after a child was very recently injured by a car opposite a local school in Church Lane.”

He continued: “Anecdotally, traffic and parking in and around Malling is getting worse every year, and further steps need to be taken to address this. Many residents also hope that the county council also works with Lewes District and Town Councils to find ways to improve the pick-up and drop off facilities around South Malling School after a parent survey.”

Mr Kent also hoped parking facilities could be improved along Church Lane.
