'Road too dangerous to walk to school'
RESIDENTS are stepping up their campaign for safety measures along Kingston Road, Lewes.
Children have designed posters in an effort to get motorists to slow down to 30mph so that they can walk along the road to school.
Most families feel that it is too dangerous to walk or cycle along Kingston Road.
Children entered their posters into a competition run by the Kingston
Road and Cranedown Residents' Association (KRCRA).
The winning posters will be put up around town.
Research by the residents' association shows:
• 77 per cent of Kingston Road of Cranedown residents feel it is unsafe or very unsafe to walk along the Kingston Road,
• 73 per cent feel it is unsafe or very unsafe to cross the road.
• 85 per cent would walk or cycle more if the road were safer
• 57 per cent are making extra car journeys because of the dangers of the road (the equivalent of 7,800 journeys per year)
• 86 per cent of resident's households with children use the car rather than walking or cycling
• More than 90 per cent of households with children feel 'worried' or 'very worried' about walking or cycling to school
• 100 per cent of resident's households with children would walk or cycle more if the road were safer
This statistics have been passed to East sussex County Council.
Residents are asking for a 30 mph speed limit; wider pavements and a pedestrian crossing.
Residents have asked for a cycle/footpath to be built along the section of the road where the pavements are narrowest and the road most dangerous.
Farmer, Tom Carr, has offered to give, free of charge, the land that would be needed to build this cycle/footpath.
Speed monitoring by members of the association shows speeds along the road are increasing.
*Winners of the poster competition were: 9 to 10 years - winner, Charlie Clarke; runners-up, Frances Bell - Davis, Lillie Bell, William Burton.
Ages 6 to 8, winner, Oli Burton; runners-up, Daisy Palmer, Jasmine Birch, Harriet Sallis, Joel Bell.
Prizes were donated by Lewes FC, Southdown Tennis Club, Bevernbridge riding stables, Lewes Heating, and Clever Works Limited.
Judges were MP Norman Baker, Lewes FC manager Steve King and Cllr Ruth O' Keefe.
Posters have been displayed at the town hall.
