Rogue trader jailed after bank staff sparks investigation

A rogue trader has been jailed after targeting an elderly Hailsham resident.

Nicholas Blundell pleaded guilty to one count of fraud and one count of forgery.

He was sentenced to 16-months imprisonment on September 28.

Blundell, formerly of Gourney Road, Hailsham, was caught when an eagle-eyed bank worker contacted the resident’s son over excessive money transfers.

East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service and Sussex Police then launched an investigation into Blundell, who later admitted charging an “excessive and misleading” price for house repairs.

A cheque handed over for the work was also found to have been altered from £3,500 to £8,500 by Blundell.

Coun Lock, lead member for economy at the county council, said: “This sends out a clear message to any would-be rogue trader that fraudulent behaviour will not be tolerated in East Sussex.”
