In support of Earth Hour on Saturday, March 27, Wealden District Council will be encouraging residents to reduce their domestic electricity consumption by inviting 120 householders to take up the offer of a free loan of a home energy monitor. Council leader Cllr Pam Doodes said: "The main message of Earth Hour is for everyone to play their part by switching off their lights and any unnecessary domestic appliances at 8.30pm this Saturday for one hour. We believe it is important to take climate change seriously every day of the year. This challenge is designed to prove to us all how much we can reduce our electricity consumption. We can then also enjoy the financial savings."
The council is inviting households to take up the offer of a free loan of a home energy monitor for three weeks to see how much energy they use and what they can switch off to make savings. Wealden has 120 monitors available for collection on a first-come, first-served basis from offices in Vicarage Lane, Hailsham; and Pine Grove, Crowborough.
Trials using the Current Cost monitors, which are being loaned, show that households have been able to reduce their electricity usage by up to ten per cent, making real savings on the cost of their energy bills.
The Current Cost monitor tracks energy usage of electrical appliances in the household. It details the running costs, and how much is being consumed at different times of the day. The monitor will be available for loan from the receptions at Wealden District Council's Hailsham and Crowborough offices from Monday 29 March.
