Scheme aims to make travelling to school in Seaford safer

A PROJECT to help make the school journey safer for pupils and parents is being launched next week at Seaford and Alfriston.

Think School Travel is a community group working with Seaford schools to encourage everyone to ‘Drive Safely, Park Safely, Walk Safely’.

Meetings have been held with the schools to help pinpoint issues concerning parking and road safety around schools and support has come from headteachers, police and county cllr Carolyn Lambert.

An Awards For All Big Lottery Fund will pay for banners for schools to display on their gates, leaflets and posters and to fund the project throughout the year.

During the launch week older pupils will patrol as ‘Junior Road Safety Officers’ at school gates, asking parents to drive and park safely.

Think School Travel will visit: Cradle Hill School, Lexden Road; Seaford Primary School, Wilkinson Way; Annecy School, Sutton Avenue; Seaford Head School, Steyne Road and Alfriston School, North Road on Monday.

On Thursday the group will hold a ‘travelling assembly’, including a talk, presentation, a drama and a song.

Every pupil will receive a wrist band, a keyring and a leaflet about the campaign.

“We hope that the children will tell their parents about it and our message ‘ Drive Safely, Park Safely’ Walk Safely’ will get through,” said Think School Travel.

When parents park close to the school it causes congestion, danger to pedestrians and pollution, the group said.

The campaign aims to stop drivers parking on pavements or across junctions, stopping or parking on zig-zag lines, reduce congestion around schools, bring awareness of road safety to children and reduce noise and pollution.

East Sussex County Council is being asked to look at traffic calming measures in roads surrounding schools, including 20mph zones, better road signs and flashing lights indicating to drivers there are schools nearby, double yellow lines and parking restrictions in some roads and junctions around schools and zebra crossings.
