A scheme to encourage people to do their Christmas shopping in Seaford and vote for their favourite independent shop received a good response.

More than 2,000 people voted in the Favourite Independent Retailer of the Year 2012 competition.

Seaford Mayor Linda Wallraven presented the trophy to the winners David and Helen Pollard from Seaford Health Store on Thursday January 10.

A total of 45 independent shops took part, giving customers who voted the chance to win £100 to spend at their favourite shop.

The scheme’s architect, cllr Sam Adeniji, who donated the trophy, said: “The responses from both local retailers in Seaford and from members of the public were very reassuring.

“A total of 45 local independent shops took part in the scheme and a total of 2,140 votes were cast.

“Many of the shoppers I spoke to mentioned that this initiative helped draw their attention to some of the wonderful independent retailers we have in Seaford.”

The aim of the scheme was to promote local shops in Seaford and to encourage people to use independent local shops, which were not part of a chain.

The winner of £100 to spend at the shop they voted for was Michael Still, who selected Paul’s Plaice.

The top five Independent Retailers of the Year were: 1st place, Seaford Health Store in Church Street; 2nd place, Toy Town in High Street; 3rd place, Millies Boutique in Broad Street; 4th place (joint), Fotobox in Broad Street and L Cameron & Son Ltd in Broad Street and 5th place Ambers Florist in Broad Street.

Cllr Adeniji, who represents Seaford on Lewes District Council, added: “My wish is that this initiative is the beginning of a dialogue with Seaford retailers.

“I have been to many of the shops and over a few weeks I intend to continue this conversation.

“A lot of issues and ideas have been raised from my conversation with local retailers and I am confident that over the next few months many more local initiatives will be championed that will help promote our local shops and our lovely seaside town.”

Independent Retailer of the Year and Do Your Christmas Shopping in Seaford ran from Saturday November 24 to Sunday December 23.

Shoppers were encouraged to use their favourite local retailer and vote in the stores, online or by post, for their favourite shop.

The retailer with the most votes was crowned People’s Favourite Retailer of the Year.

A video of the presentation is available to view on the Sussex Express website.
