Scheme to help relations between horse riders and dog owners launched in Ashdown Forest

Ashdown Forest

Ashdown Forest

Conservators of Ashdown Forest report several unpleasant incidents involving dogs and horses around the Horder Centre area.

These have involved uncontrolled dogs rushing up to and barking at horses and rude or abusive dog owners.

Now a new scheme which aims to improve relations between dog owners and horse riders is being introduced.

‘Every Dog Matters’ is a project initiated by the Conservators of Ashdown run jointly with the Ashdown Forest Riding Association (AFRA.)

Sessions are being planned for dog owners to help them understand good dog control and to improve that control whilst around horses and other animals on the Forest.

Professional dog walkers have already signed up to a voluntary Code of Conduct which is working well and has opened up new lines of communication with the dog community.

AFRA are also running sessions for riders on how to control the situation when they encounter troublesome dogs.

The sessions will be lead by Rebecca Johns, a professional rider and trainer, who specialises in equine behaviour and its application to training.

AFRA has arranged for three sessions for riders to be run at Nutley Village Hall from 7.30-9.30pm, Thursday, March 14 and Thursday, April 11 and 7-9.30pm on Thursday, April 25. Sessions are free to AFRA members.

Non members pay £10. Information from Jane Green on: janegreen9@btinternet.com
