School ordains its chaplain
A local secondary school has become one of the few state schools in the country to appoint its own full-time chaplain.
The Bishop Bell CE Mathematics and Computing Specialist School, held a licensing service to install officially their new chaplain in her post this week.
The service was led by Rev Philip Jones, Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings, who began by reading out a message of support from The Rt Rev Wallace Benn, Bishop of Lewes.
During the service, attended by parents, pupils, staff, governors and representatives of the Christian community, the Archdeacon referred to the new chaplain, Rev Vivienne Flanagan, as 'a dream come true'.
Rev Vivienne is Bishop Bell's first ever full-time chaplain and the school had been trying for a long time to make such an appointment.
Bishop Bell's headteacher Terry Boatwright said, "As a Christian, and being part of a church school such as this, we have come to see miracles as part of life.
"Without a doubt, Vivienne is a miracle and the answer to many years of prayer."
Rev Vivienne has come to Bishop Bell School from a post as priest-in-charge of a parish in Nottingham.
During the service she spoke of her delight at joining the school and her sense of calling to this post.
She is accustomed to schools as, before being ordained, Vivienne was a modern languages teacher.
