Schools can go to the cinema free of charge next month
AS AN EARLY treat in the long autumn term, schoolchildren are being offered the chance to go to the pictures free. As part of National Schools Film Week, teachers can book free tickets on line to attend Uckfield Picturehouse and see Ice Age: Continental Drift (U, 94) on Tuesday, October 23 or Puss in Boots (U, 90) on Wednesday, October 26.
The aim is to support classroom teaching by providing schools with a powerful experience for their students that links directly to elements of the curriculum – supported by an on-line library of resources related to individual films and more generic topics – essentially an extension of the classroom.
More than 470,000 students and their teachers attended in 2011 and this year the film festival, which operates on a scale unknown in any other country – 2,500 screenings at 570 cinemas across the UK – celebrates its 17th birthday.’
Nick Walker, festival director said: “The festival seeks to create a greater awareness and understanding of cinema based on the concept of relationships and dialogues in a variety of films, address issues of cultural exchange and raise awareness amongst teaching professionals of the use of film across the school curriculum.” Mark Hughes, teacher at Little Horsted Primary School said: “During National Schools Film Week, the students all get to go out together and bond as a class, and discussing issues that they found in the film becomes social.” To book or find out more visit: www.nationalschoolsfilmweek.org
