SEAFORD Exchange Project’s bid to build a community classroom in their garden has been helped by a donation of building materials by Sussex builder’s merchant, Chandlers Building Supplies.

The Exchange Project was launched in 2007 to transform a derelict site into a community garden in the Crouch Gardens, just off East Street.

A classroom is currently being built so that the garden can offer a further educational element to local people.

In order to improve accessibility, particularly for those with mobility problems, a large area of paving was required.

The site now boasts a Mediterranean corner, a wildlife zone, including a pond, and a children’s play area. In addition, there is a patch dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables organically.

Unpaid volunteers of all ages and abilities continue to maintain the gardens.

Nigel Williams, Chandlers Ringmer sales office manager, said: “We were delighted to be able to support the Seaford Exchange Community Garden Project.

“Giving back to the local community is always something we strive for and we hope that everyone in the area will be able to enjoy the garden for years to come.”

Katie Hoff, of The Seaford Exchange Community Garden Project, said the group was very grateful for Chandlers’ generous assistance.

“As a result of this and a substantial contribution from Seaford Rotary Club, we will now be able to complete the project,” she said.

“We hope that the classroom will be open and accessible to all in the very near future.”

The garden holds open days on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm and is staging a Pumpkin Party on on Sunday October 30 from 3pm to dusk, for the biggest, ugliest, weirdest pumpkin competitions, pumpkin carving, face painting, refreshments and a twilight lantern parade.
