A sponsored walk organised by Seaford Martello Rotary Club raised almost £5,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The group presented a cheque to Val Barnes from Cancer Research UK and consultant oncologist Doctor Duncan Gilbert, who works at hospitals in Eastbourne and Brighton, at a Rotary meeting.

The sponsored walk was held in May 2012 and raised an impressive £4744.30.

This brings the rotary club’s grand fundraising total for the charity to £5,450 to date.

The club is also organising another sponsored walk in 2013, this time in aid of Sussex Air Ambulance.

It will be held on Sunday May 5 and will be a circular route of approximately 13 miles, starting and finishing at the Martello Fields , on the Esplanade, in Seaford.

The walk will take participants on a scenic route through Bishopstone to Alfriston, then return along the banks of the Cuckmere River to Exceat and then on to Seaford Head and finally back to Martello Fields.

Seaford Martello Rotary Club president Julian Turner said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in the sponsored walk. What a great result for Cancer Research UK.

“I would also like to thank all the members of this club for the service they gave to ensure the event was a success, and in particular the event organiser Ted Hopkins.”

The club will be setting up the Tavern in The Tent to provide refreshments before, during and after the walk.
