Seaford Silver Band stalwart Sylvia is celebrated
Sylvia Lucas
CURRENT members and friends of Seaford Silver Band came together on Wednesday September 12 to celebrate Sylvia Lucas’s 65 year long membership.
Sylvia retired from active membership earlier this year and this was marked by making her life vice president.
She joined in 1946. Her father and uncle were members too.
Sylvia and her husband Arthur started the Youth Band.
She was the principal cornet for a period and subsequently used her skill and experience to help and encourage newcomers to the section from a position in the second row.
She played with the band when it progressed from the fourth to the Championship Sections of the Southern Counties Amateur Band Association, also winning medals in solo and quartet contests with her sister, Valerie.
She made recordings for BBC Radio Brighton, played for a dance in the Hove Engineerium, on the MV Senlac during the 1977 Spithead Royal Review of the Fleet and for a BBC ‘Songs of Praise’ programme, as well as many appearances on Eastbourne Bandstand and at local fêtes and garden parties.
