Seaford to have farmers’ market

A WEEKLY farmers’ market will open in Seaford on Thursday October 4 bringing shoppers the chance to buy local produce from around 20 stalls.

Market organiser Cathy Murphy, who also runs Sussex Kitchen in Seaford, said she decided to set it up in response to a huge demand for a farmers’ market in the town.

It will be staged indoors at the Clinton Centre from 9am to 1pm and will never need to close due to bad weather.

Cathy said: “After talking to many customers at food fairs and shows over this year, about buying local produce, the feedback has always been very positive.

“There is a huge demand for local produce in this area of East Sussex, and I just feel the time is right to have a farmers’ market in Seaford.

“There are others in East Dean and Newhaven, Brighton and Lewes etc, but the Clinton Centre in Seaford has just been totally refurbished, is an ideal venue, it is indoor, so will never need to close due to the weather, has a large footfall, and is very centrally located on the main A259.

“After visiting many of the other farmers markets in Sussex, there is always such a buzz amongst the stall holders and the buyers who really truly believe in buying fresh local produce and supporting their local Sussex producers and farmers at these markets.

“I want to create a more modern feel market with a nice indoor feel, with refreshments being served, so customers can sit and sample some of the fabulous homemade produce with a cuppa.”

Sussex producers will sell speciality meats and sausages, honey, eggs, preserves, local vegetables and fruit.

Other products which will be available at the market will include speciality breads, cheeses, homemade cakes and homemade savouries.

Cathy added: “We have chosen a Thursday, due to local markets being on other days in the area.

“If the market is a success, we may expand to another day in the week for local artisans to showcase their homemade gifts, crafts and arts leading up till Christmas.”
