See where martys were confined before their execution in Lewes
VISITORS can take a guided tour of Lewes Town Hall with the Mayor, Cllr Michael Chartier, on Sunday (September 9) as part of the national Heritage Open Days event.
Discover the vaulted cellars where the 17 Protestant martyrs were confined before being burned at the stake, in front of what was then The Star Inn, during the Marian Persecutions of 1555–1557.
The Town Hall also features a magnificent Elizabethan staircase and visitors will be able to see the Council Chamber and the Mayor’s Parlour with its old oak panelling.
Also of interest is the impressive Georgian Assembly Room with its stained glass windows and the adjoining Corn Exchange, previously the local commercial and agricultural market.
Entrance is free and tours will take place at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Booking is recommended as numbers are limited and tickets are available from the Town Hall on 01273 471469.
Also, as part of this event, and in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, an Exhibition of Royal Memorabilia presented by Tony Shephard will be open in the Yarrow Room at the Town Hall between 10am and 4pm.
Other properties in Heritage Open Days locally include the Grade I Listed Jireh Chapel, recently restored by English Heritage, and Lewes Old Grammar School which will be showing visitors round its buildings old and new in the High Street.
