Severe weather warning for county

THE MET Office has issued a severe weather warning for East Sussex today because of widespread icy conditions.

Temperatures are expected to stay around freezing for most of the day, dropping sharply to minus three tonight.

Gritters were out in force across East Sussex last night spreading lorry loads of salt.

In an online statement the Met Office said: 'Surfaces left wet from sleet and snow showers will lead to icy conditions on untreated roads and pavements.

'The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the 'Highways Agency' for further advice on traffic disruption on motorways and trunk roads.'

The emergency services have urged drivers to take extra care.

Experts say the cold snap was caused by Arctic air which swept across Scandinavia and over the North Sea.

It is expected to continue throughout the week.

Age Concern is calling on older people to take extra precautions to stay warm and active.

Anyone cutting back on basics such as food and heating because of high energy bills should call Age Concern's free helpline on 0800 00 99 66.
