Shake the paw of Brin the ‘SAS’ trooper hound

Brin retired from the warzone in Afghanistan a while ago - and has now put on little bit of weight.

YOU can meet a brave soldier dog who once helped British soldiers tackle Taliban extremists in Afghanistan.

The story of Brin has been told many times in the Sussex Express, the county’s 175-year-old newspaper.

This stray, starving dog was found barking at the side of a road in Lashkar Gah, Helmand Province in March 2010.

He was barking to warn the soldiers of a hidden bomb device that would have killed two soldiers at the front.

They decided to take him back to their base where he would go out on patrols, guiding them through some of the most dangerous of territory.

Taliban militants heard about Brin and began to fear him - firmly believing him to be a specially trained SAS dog.

Later he was captured whilst out on patrol - but British troops kept a look-out for him. The adventurous hound was rescued by the Afghan National Guard during a commando raid.

By this time Sally Baldwin, from Hailsham, and a teacher at Laughton Primary School, learnt about Brin from her friend Captain Mark Townend from Hertfordshire. She began a campaign with support from the Sussex Express to bring Brin home to England.

Mrs Baldwin now cares for Brin at her home in Hailsham where has gained some weight. The dog, given a PDSA Loyalty Award for not leaving soldiers whilst on patrol, visits schools and organisations to tell his story.

Nowzad , the organisation which helped Mrs Baldwin bring Brin home, will have a stall at the RSPCA funday  from 10.30am to 4pm at Braypool Lane, in Patcham, Brighton this Sunday, July 15. Brin will meet fans including people who have travelled from the USA, wanting to shake his paw.
